Collina Torinese Plums
Definition
The hills of Turin and Chieri have been traditionally interested by the cultivation of a number of local plum cultivars.
According to a survey carried out in 1994 by the Territorial Farmers' Union of Chieri and Casalborgone, Regione Piemonte, and the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Turin, there are 30 local plum varieties. Among them, the following ones are worth a mention:
- San Luigi, characteristic of Verrua Savoia area
- San Giovanni, characteristic of San Mauro Torinese area
- Saluzzo, characteristic of Gassino Torinese area
- Santa Rosa, characteristic of Gassino area
- Ramassin dla nebbia, characteristic of San Mauro Torinese area
- Round Settembrina, characteristic of Gassino Torinese area
- Oval Settembrina, characteristic of Sciolze area.
- Further varieties are: Bertola, Spagna, Gaiotti, Sant'Anna, Ramassin d'agosto, Aprà, Bernarda, Frignone, Uova di tacchino, Rosa, Maribulan, Ramassin bianca, Del col viola, Maddalena.
All these local varieties are characterized by a greater resistance to parasites and cryptogams and, therefore, are not subject to any treatment, either in the field or during the preservation stage.
- Production Area: The production area includes the Municipalities of Collina Torinese (on the right bank of Po river) and Chierese areas.
- Legislative Protection: Collina Torinese Plums are classified among the "Traditional Agri-foodstuffs of Regione Piemonte", according to art. 8 of the Legislative Decree 30th April 1998, n. 173 and the Annex to the Decisions of the Regional Council 15th April 2002 n. 46-5823.
