Baldissero Torinese Peach

Definition
With the name "Baldissero peaches" we refer to and safeguard two different groups of peaches, obtained by local selections:
- "vineyard peaches"
- "grafted peaches"
Both peach selections adapt very well to the calcareous soils of Baldissero Torinese area where, usually, more common peaches suffer from chlorosis.

"Vineyard peaches", born from seed, are different from grafted peaches for their more luxuriant aspect given by the fact they are chlorosis immune and are usually plants which are isolated or mixed with the vine, along the vineyard lines.

"Grafted peaches" are usually cultivated in tree lines, in a orchard.

  • Production areas: The peach production area includes Baldissero Torinese and the adjacent Municipalities in the Province of Turin.

  • History: peach trees were historically widespread in the area of Baldissero Torinese, cultivated together with the vineyards. After the damages caused by the phylloxera, in the early 20th century all the local vineyards were replanted. The new peach plants were mainly cultivated with cherry trees and plum trees. Some local selections have been limited to a family use or circumscribed to small local markets.

  • Curiosities and uses: in some places, the peach stones were used to prepare brittles or local products like amaretti, Arignano Cake and bread pie. With vineyard peaches cut in a half, dried in the oven and filled with crumbled amaretti, cocoa, and fruit pulp, you can prepare one of the most characteristic desserts of Piedmont, the so-called stuffed peaches.

  • Legislative protection: Baldissero Torinese peaches are classified among the "Traditional Agri-foodstuffs of Regione Piemonte", according to art. 8 of the Legislative Decree 30th April 1998, n. 173 and to the Annex to the Decisions of the Regional Council 15th April 2002 n. 46-5823.
