Ghiaia Grande has in itself the nature of both the Po River and Monferrato. They are two complementary environments: on the hill, the wood with grey herons, and on the plain, oxbow lakes, riverbank woods, and a bare riverbank stretch.
The point of departure is Coniolo, the village that lived twice: at the beginning of the XIX century its inhabitants realised that their homes were collapsing because of intense marl quarrying. Many houses were then disassembled bit by bit, and the village was rebuilt on the hill opposite. In Coniolo Rotto, the original village, the ruins of the castle are still visible among the vegetation.
